Kids Welcome
We are often asked if we treat children and at what age should they have their first dental appointment. Not only do we see children, but we hope to meet them early on – ideally when they’re between 2 to 3 years of age.
Our objective is to build a caring relationship with each child based on trust. To make sure that going to the dentist is a positive experience, we address their needs at their level – from using kid-friendly terminology to oversized models to demonstrate everything they need to know. In no time at all they become part of and enjoy their first dental experience. Before you know it their teeth are cleaned by a skilled hygienist and evaluated by the dentist. The appointment wraps up with a high-five, the child’s very own keepsake picture with the dentist and, of course, a trip to the prize box!
We’ll also talk with you and your child about what they should do at home to take good care of their teeth. The sooner kids learn about the importance of brushing and flossing regularly, the easier it is to make it part of their routine.
For parents of infants, we encourage you to swab your child’s gums with a moist gauze. This helps keep the gums clean and gets your child comfortable with the feeling of having something in their mouth. When teeth develop, use a wet, soft toothbrush. Once your child is able to spit you can introduce a pea-sized dab of toothpaste.
When you are ready, there is very little you have to do to prepare your child for their first visit. Simply talk about the upcoming visit in a positive manner, as you would any important new experience, and we’ll do the rest! Everyone in our practice has a genuine love for children, are highly trained in children’s dentistry and are dedicated to making sure your child is comfortable. This approach has been a tremendous success with our young patients and puts parents at ease.
We very much look forward to caring for you and your family.
