The cold sore is caused by a virus and can occur in the mouth or on the lips. It typically presents with a tingling or a burning sensation prior to the outbreak of the painful ulcer. It is at this point you want to nail it. It is at this point when it can usually be arrested right in its tracks. Several ointments and pills are available to treat cold sores.
The apthous ulcer is not caused by a virus but by an autoimmune reaction. Like the cold sore they can be brought on by stress, medications, trauma and often for reasons unknown. Unlike the cold sore which is contagious, the apthous ulcer is not contagious. The best medication to stop apthous ulcer pain is available at our office. A 10 second application usually brings immediate relief!!!!
